DCGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to "recognizing, honoring, valuing and training Direct Caregivers, thus assuring that those who need care are treated with dignity, compassion, and skill." We seek to create a society where caregivers are treated and fairly compensated as indispensable members of a professional caregiving team, and where our most vulnerable citizens routinely receive compassionate and skilled care.

DCGA is a membership organization of caregivers, consumers, providers, professional counsel, researchers, and policy-makers, working together to solve the problems facing long-term care collaboratively. DCGA seeks to address caregiver issues systemically: on the one hand, by providing opportunities for caregivers to pursue training, certification, and continuing education to improve these low-income individuals’ wage and advancement possibilities; and, on the other hand, by improving the system in which caregivers work by developing standards, educating the public, and working with providers to enhance recruitment, screening, and retention.

DCGA developed its current identity, mission, and programs beginning in November 2000, although as the Center for the Development of Human Services, it has existed since 1990. DCGA is guided by a Strategic Plan first developed in July 2001 that the Board of Directors reviews yearly and revises as necessary.
